Multi-Modality Matching

Have you taken the Quick Tour?

Objectives:

  • To stimulate auditory and/or visual recognition and comprehension for improved semantic and phonological processing.
  • To provide practice in repetition, picture naming and oral reading of single words.

A typical exercise:

In a typical exercise, the user selects a matching task at an appropriate level of difficulty. Suppose a written word to picture match is selected with three choices. The user sees a printed word (the target) along with three pictures (the target picture and two foils) from which he or she selects the image that corresponds to the printed word. Spoken initial phoneme and word cues are available to assist selection. (For other matching exercises, different cues are available.) After the user selects a response, the simple feedback “That's right” or “No, try again” is heard. Each exercise consists of 20 items which are randomized so that different combinations of words and pictures appear during each exercise.

Program Details:

Vocabulary — The program targets 422 words organized in three main categories: animals/objects, actions and people. Vocabulary includes:

  • animals
  • items of clothing
  • foods
  • large objects (including vehicles, rooms and other parts of a house, furniture and appliances and items in the landscape)
  • small objects (including kitchen items, tools, office items, personal care and leisure items)
  • people depicting various occupations
  • actions

Type of Match — Targeted items (pictures, printed words or spoken words) are matched to a multiple choice set (printed word or picture) which includes the target (answer) plus one to three foils. The match may be:

  • a written word to pictures
  • a picture to written words
  • a spoken word to pictures
  • a spoken word to written words

Cues — Spoken (initial phoneme and complete word), written (complete word) and picture cues are provided to assist the user in making the match. The cues available vary depending on the type of match.

Level of difficulty — The level of difficulty in an exercise is determined by selecting the following three parameters via the Exercise Settings dialog box.

  • Vocabulary familiarity — This is based on word frequency and is categorized as follows:

Easy — words from the highest frequency quartile
Hard — words from the lowest frequency quartile
Mixed — words from all quartiles

  • Choice relatedness — Refers to the degree of relatedness between the target and its foils.

Easy — means choices appearing with the target are from different semantic categories.
Mixed — means that half the choices, on average, will be from the same semantic category.
Hard — means choices appearing with the target are from the same semantic category. (NOTE: choices that appear with actions and people are always Hard)

  • Number of choices — The number of choices indicates how many pictures or words will be presented on the screen (two to four).

Results — Each time an exercise is run a Report is automatically generated and saved.
