Cued Naming

Have you taken the Quick Tour?

Objectives:

  • To improve word retrieval.
  • To provide practice in repetition, picture naming and oral reading of single words, phrases and sentences.

A typical exercise:

In a typical exercise, pictures of 20 items to be named appear singly on the screen. After clicking the “?” below the picture, the user is asked “What is this?” The user is encouraged to use any of the available cues that facilitate naming and to gradually withdraw from use of the cues.

Program Description:

Vocabulary — The program targets 422 words organized in three main categories: animals/objects, actions and people. Vocabulary includes:
  • animals
  • items of clothing
  • foods
  • large objects (including vehicles, rooms and other parts of a house, furniture and appliances, and items in the landscape)
  • small objects (including kitchen items, tools, office items, personal care and leisure items)
  • people depicting various occupations
  • actions

Cues — The number and type of cues made available for naming assistance are listed below (eight for nouns, four for verbs). The user is encouraged to use any cues that facilitate naming as many times as needed and to gradually withdraw from use of the cues. Users can check for correctness by comparing their responses to the spoken name cue. Self-perception of accuracy is logged once the user clicks on the “happy face” icon.

Level of difficulty — The level of difficulty in an exercise is determined by selecting one of three parameters - easy, hard or mixed - via the Exercise Settings dialog box.
  • Vocabulary familiarity — This is based on word frequency and is categorized as follows:

Easy - words from the highest frequency quartile
Hard - words from the lowest frequency quartile
Mixed - words from all quartiles

Results — Each time an exercise is run a Report is automatically generated and saved.
